We're Changing the Culture and Behaviors of Firearms in America

Gun violence is a uniquely American epidemic. As this crisis worsens, we know that changing laws and policies isn’t the only solution. We must also change the way Americans think about the culture we’ve created around guns, gun violence, and gun violence prevention. In other words, we need to change America’s hearts and minds.

America has had great success doing just this with other major public health crises. Think about how we've shifted attitudes and behaviors to curb youth smoking, promote seatbelt usage, and prevent drunk driving. Just as we started asking friends if they were “safe to drive” after drinking, we can foster norms like checking in on a loved one's access to firearms when they’re in crisis and encouraging parents and guardians to ask about access to unlocked guns during playdates.

By changing the culture around how we use, own, and perceive firearms, we can create a safer America for us all.

BRADY HAS SEVERAL INITIATIVES IN PLACE THAT ARE DEDICATED TO CHANGING HEARTS AND MINDS.

  • End family fire

End Family Fire: Encouraging Responsible Gun Use

Our End Family Fire program encourages safe firearm storage, primarily through a national Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign, which targets gun owners, encouraging them to be part of the solution. This apolitical effort has proven success at changing attitudes and behaviors around safe gun storage. Gun owners and people in gun-owning households who are aware of the campaign are significantly more likely to make changes to store their guns more safely.

  • Ask is there an unlocked gun in your home safe storage

Asking Saves Kids: Encouraging Parents to Ask About Unlocked Guns at Home

Parents ask all types of questions before their children visit other homes. Imagine if we treated firearms as deadly as we do peanuts. Our Asking Saves Kids (ASK) campaign, a major component of promoting safe firearm storage, encourages parents, guardians, and caretakers to always ask: "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?" By making this simple question the norm, we have the power to save a child’s life.
