Washington, D.C., June 22, 2023 – This week celebrates the one-year anniversary of the passage and signage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years. Brady, the country’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, is working with state governments to implement the legislation.
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“Last year, we showed what we can accomplish when we turn our grief and anger into action. On the heels of horrific shootings in Buffalo, NY, and Uvalde, TX, we passed the most comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years with bipartisan support, something unthinkable only months before. Yet, growing gun sales, firearm homicide, crime gun trafficking, unintentional shootings, and increasingly regular mass shootings remind us there is much more to be done in order to address this public health epidemic.
“While we currently have a Congress that seems historically divided along partisan lines, last year 234 members of the House and 65 Senators voted for this legislation, demonstrating there is indeed common ground for greater action on gun violence. Congress can and should act today to pass legislation that is supported by the majority of Americans, including universal background checks, robust funding for Community Violence Initiatives (CVI) and the reauthorization of the Assault Weapons Ban.
“This epidemic will not be solved with a solitary piece of legislation, but if we continue to hold our lawmakers accountable to the people, not the gun industry, we will end gun violence in the U.S. once and for all.”
