Washington, D.C., July 31, 2018 – In a last-minute decision that will protect innocent lives across the U.S. and even worldwide, a federal court issued a temporary restraining order blocking crypto-anarchist Cody Wilson and his company, Defense Distributed, from publishing blueprints for 3D-printed guns. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which has been leading the fight to prevent this threat for years, hailed the decision as a victory for public safety.
“It is immediately obvious to anyone who looks at this issue that 3D-printed guns are nothing short of a menace to society, and we are thrilled that the court ruled in this manner,” stated Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign. “The efforts of these Attorneys General throughout the nation have helped strike a powerful blow against the scourge of 3D-printed guns, but we know this fight is not yet over. We will continue to do everything in our power to make sure that this temporary halt in publication becomes a permanent one.”
The suit filed by a coalition of Attorneys General throughout the country followed last week’s efforts by the Brady Campaign, Everytown for Gun Safety, and the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence to block the terms of a settlement between Defense Distributed and the U.S. State Department allowing the online publication of downloadable gun blueprints. While a final order has not been issued, U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik has informed participants that he will issue a temporary restraining order in the case.
“There is simply no way of telling how much damage has already been done by Cody Wilson’s dangerous and reckless actions,” stated Brady Campaign co-president Kris Brown. “This is a strong step and a clear victory for the entire gun safety movement, but we simply can’t let up. We renew our call for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to block these blueprints from online publication. It is no hyperbole to say that our safety, and the safety of our children, is at stake.”
In addition to the suit, a bipartisan group of Attorneys General wrote to Secretary Pompeo and Attorney General Sessions to express their concerns. Legislation has also been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate to prevent the blueprints from being published. Additionally, President Trump seemed to question his own administration’s settlement this morning.
