Washington, D.C., July 15, 2022 - Today, Brady applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023, including an amendment that restores congressional oversight to firearm exports. Congress previously enjoyed this oversight, but regulatory changes made under the Trump Administration altered this balance and placed the export of semiautomatic and nonautomatic weapons under the Commerce Department’s control. The NDAA passed by the House restores congressional notification and the opportunity to disapprove of such exports.Brady President Kris Brown shared:
“Our federal government has a responsibility to ensure that our nation is not wantonly exporting our gun violence crisis to other nations or arming human rights abusers, terrorist states or other bad actors with American-made weapons in the name of firearm manufacturer profits. As a nation, we will not accept a system that puts profits over human lives whether at home or abroad. The amendment passed in the NDAA is a common-sense fix to create greater transparency around firearms exports and undo the harmful regulatory changes made under the Trump Administration. Brady applauds the House of Representatives for ensuring this important amendment was included in the final bill and for passing this bill without delay.”
