WASHINGTON, D.C., December, 19, 2022 — Brady is celebrating the final passage of a life-saving gun safety bill in the New Jersey state legislature that will strengthen New Jersey’s concealed carry permitting system following the Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
Strong gun laws save lives, and New Jersey has some of the strongest in the nation. Unfortunately, the Bruen decision invalidated part of New Jersey’s concealed carry permitting system putting communities across the state at risk. In states with weak concealed carry laws, violent crime rates rose upwards of 15% after 10 years. In addition to ensuring a robust concealed carry permitting process, the bill — S3214 & A 4769 — will also ban guns from “sensitive places,” including preschools and childcare facilities, public transportation, hospitals and care facilities, public event spaces, playgrounds, public parks, and several others.

“It is no secret why New Jersey has one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the country: strong gun laws. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court's reckless and dangerous Bruen decision has threatened to derail this progress and put countless communities at risk. With today’s passage of S3214, and the passage of its companion bill A4769 in the Assembly earlier this month, New Jersey has again chosen to prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens. This bill will prevent future violence and will save lives.
“There is a direct link to weak concealed carry laws and increased violent crime rates. We thank Senate President Scutari, Senate Majority Leader Ruiz, Assistant Majority Leader Greenstein and the state of New Jersey for taking decisive action on gun violence.”
