Washington, D.C., June 12, 2023 – In this legislative session, Brady worked with both bodies of the New York legislature on over a dozen gun violence prevention bills to save lives and inhibit the cycle of gun violence. Brady, the oldest national gun violence prevention organization, has endorsed and worked alongside state lawmakers, national and local partners, Brady grassroots volunteers, and members of Team ENOUGH on four vital bills waiting for Governor Hochul’s signature.
Brady President Kris Brown stated:
“Every 10 hours, a New Yorker dies from gun violence. Both the Senate and the Assembly have shown commitment to their constituents and their communities, by passing bills that focus on addressing the root causes of gun violence and providing resources to families and lives that are ripped apart when tragedies from gun violence occur.
“These bills include legislation proposing community violence intervention funding from Medicaid as well as a bill that clarifies the definition of ‘mass shootings’. By increasing these funding streams and expanding access, legislators are helping communities impacted by the scourge of gun violence forge a more clear path to healing while helping to break the deadly cycle of gun violence.
“To heal the profound physical and mental scars left by gun violence, legislators have also passed bills allowing fair access to victims' compensation and support for grieving families. These measures are essential to helping New Yorkers find solace after a tragedy occurs.
“These measures strike a different facet of the gun violence epidemic with the nuance this crisis requires. Brady applauds bill champions for their success this legislative session and hopes Governor Hochul will recognize the importance of signing these bills into law.”
