October 14, 2022, Washington, DC — Today, Brady calls for state and national leaders to take action to address the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. following the 532nd mass shooting of the year. Five people were killed and two others were wounded when a shooter terrorized a Raleigh, North Carolina community Thursday evening.
While details of the shooting are still developing, Brady urges law enforcement to investigate how the suspected shooter, who is only 15-years-old, obtained his weapon and uncover whether it was obtained illegally or stored unsafely.
Brady President Kris Brown shared:
“Once again, we are reminded that no neighborhood is safe from gun violence. Whether you live in a community where you do not lock your doors, or in an area where gun violence is all too frequent, we are all at risk and we must be equally outraged. While details of this tragedy are still emerging , we know that the failure to pass comprehensive gun safety laws leaves us vulnerable to these devastating attacks. Voters must remember this as they make their way to the polls this November — we need leaders who will take action to protect the right of the American people to live freely without the fear of being shot.”
Every year, 1,470 people are killed by gun violence in North Carolina.
Each year, 571 people are victims of firearm homicide in North Carolina.
On average, 832 people in North Carolina take their own life with a firearm each year.
On average, 36 people in North Carolina die from injuries related to an unintentional shooting each year.
Since 2014, there have been at least 112 mass shootings in North Carolina – including this one.
This shooting – which killed 5 people – is the deadliest of the 17 shootings in North Carolina so far this year.
