Washington, D.C., August 28, 2023 – Today, police issued reports of an active shooter on University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s campus. This is only the second week of classes for the Fall semester. Two leaders of Brady’s youth arm – Team ENOUGH – are students at the university. A faculty member was killed in the shooting. Brady, a national gun violence prevention organization, released the following statement:
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“Back-to-school season should be synonymous with books, not bullets. But the students who today had to hide under desks and shelter in place at UNC have long learned to equate their classrooms with active shooter threats. Their lives have been overshadowed by the omnipresent threat of gun violence.
“Our youth have mobilized all across the nation to demand change to prevent tragedies like this. How many more of our children have to be killed or irrecoverably traumatized before we alter America’s relationship with firearms?
“We are heartbroken for the Chapel Hill community, and we hope for the future of our country that change will come.”
