Washington, D.C., March 15, 2020 - Tonight, Brady applauds Vice President Joe Biden for a successful debate and for guaranteeing that voters heard his plan to address gun violence.

Brady President Kris Brown stated:

“A week ago, we proudly endorsed Vice President Joe Biden in his campaign for President, and tonight he proved why he is the best champion for gun violence prevention and leader in this race.

Vice President Biden has long fought for common-sense gun violence prevention policies, again bringing that perspective to the debate stage to emphasize the importance of the federal Brady Bill and the need to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).

When asked tonight about how a Biden Administration will protect women’s security, Vice President Biden stood up for this inalienable principle: ‘No one who abuses someone else should be able to own a gun. Period.’ As the original author of the Violence Against Women Act, Joe Biden has led on this issue for almost three decades and his record is unimpeachable.

Tonight, Vice President Biden showed why he is the leader we need. He committed to choosing a woman Vice President. He committed to appointing the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. He committed to selecting a Cabinet and administration that actually looks like our country. If the government doesn’t reflect the governed then we cannot hope for equitable outcomes, and these are the kind of commitments America needs to unite our country.

Tonight, Brady congratulates him on a job well done and appreciates his continued, vocal support to ending gun violence in every community.”

During his time as a Senator, Joe Biden was a critical voice in shepherding through both the Brady Bill and the federal assault weapons ban. He was the original sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act and he forcefully opposed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) which gives the gun industry unprecedented protections under law.

As Vice President during the Obama-Biden administration, Vice President Biden was tasked with developing and implementing common-sense policies to keep Americans safe while the U.S. Senate refused to pass comprehensive legislation. Vice President Biden’s work helped to close loopholes and expand resources for Americans. He is willing and able to work with and without Congress to keep Americans safe.

Joe Biden’s record and commitment to preventing gun violence is unimpeachable. We need his leadership and vision to help pass comprehensive federal legislation and to act with the full speed and power of the executive.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
