Washington, D.C., December 8, 2020 - On the 40th anniversary of his murder, the latest episode of Brady’s podcast Red, Blue, and Brady honors the life and memory of famed musician and activist John Lennon. Host JJ Janflone is joined by Paul Friedman, founder and executive director of Safer Country; documentary and podcast producer Michael Epstein; Hawaii State Senator Karl Rhoads; Brady Director of Racial Justice Kelly Sampson; and Brady President Kris Brown, to discuss the legacy of John Lennon and the Beatles, and how extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws could possibly have saved Lennon’s life.

Red, Blue, and Brady Host JJ Janflone shared:

“Even after 40 years, John Lennon’s work and legacy remain significant and vivid in the public consciousness. Sadly, too, we are reminded how relevant the story of his death remains. This conversation reminds us how we think we can best honor John Lennon—by taking action ourselves and passing legislation that would’ve saved his life. His is a story that is truly important to hear and a legacy that we must honor with action.”

Brady President Kris Brown explained:

“All who were alive then clearly remember the news of John Lennon’s death. While it was heartbreaking to lose his voice and artistry, it is just as devastating to know that common-sense laws like an extreme risk protection order law could possibly have prevented his death. We lost a musician and a cultural icon, while those who loved him lost a husband, father, and friend, an experience that millions of others have felt in the past 40 years. Since his murder, an estimated 1,436,000 people have died from gun violence in the United States. We must continue to work to prevent gun violence in all of its forms for John Lennon and for all of these victims so that we can create a country living in peace, just as he wanted.”

About the 1980 Murder of John Lennon:

John Lennon was murdered on December 8th, 1980 as he returned to his Manhattan apartment from a recording session with his wife Yoko Ono. Lennon was shot at close range by a man who had previously told his wife that he intended to murder Lennon and had traveled from Hawaii to do so.
