Washington, D.C., April 13, 2023 – In the wake of the mass shooting at Michigan State University, today Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law expanded Background Checks and Safe Storage legislation. Brady has worked closely with state policy makers and in partnership with local, state and national partners on these bills.

Brady President Kris Brown, said:

“Today, Michigan lawmakers proved that we can in fact take meaningful action to address this epidemic, and we are now one step closer to freeing an entire generation from the constant fear of being shot. These laws will go a long way in protecting the children of Michigan, their families, and their communities.
“Expanding universal background checks, a policy supported by more than 90% of Americans, is foundational to keeping firearms out of the hands of those who should not have them and to preventing gun trafficking. Additionally, this safe storage law will ensure that firearms throughout Michigan are responsibly stored to prevent use by those at risk of dangerous behavior.
“Brady applauds Gov. Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Brinks, Majority Floor Leader Singh, Chairwoman Chang, Speaker Tate, Chairs Breen and Brabec and Democratic members of the state legislature for their leadership and commitment to addressing gun violence in Michigan.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
