Bipartisan Bill Would Save Lives by Incentivizing Sales of Firearm Storage Devices.

Washington, D.C., Tuesday, April 24, 2023 – Today, the Prevent Family Fire Act was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives led by U.S. Reps. Mike Levin (D-Calif.), Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), and Young Kim (R-Calif.). They are joined by U.S. Reps. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) and Vicente Gonzalez (D-Tex.) as original cosponsors. This legislation will help reduce firearm suicide and unintentional shootings by providing a tax credit for retailers to incentivize the sale of safe firearm storage devices.

Every day, eight children are unintentionally killed or injured by a gun, often one that is found loaded and unsecured in the home, and 65 Americans die by gun suicide. These devastating incidents of “family fire” involve someone having access to an improperly stored firearm in the home. Brady’s End Family Fire program aims to educate the public on the importance of safe storage practices.

Brady President Kris Brown said:

“Unsecured and improperly stored firearms in the home can quickly lead to instances of family fire. And as gun sales continue to increase, so does the need for safe storage practices to prevent these tragic outcomes.
“Individuals with unsecured guns in the home are up to two times more likely to be murdered, while guns in the home increase the risk of homicide in a domestic violence incident by up to 500% and increase the likelihood of a fatal outcome in the case of a suicide attempt by 300%.
“This legislation would incentivize the sale of safe storage devices, ensuring that guns are safely stored and away from people who should not have them. Brady is proud to endorse this bill that will better protect gun-owners and their family and friends."

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
