Four Morgan State University students were shot overnight.

Washington, D.C., October 4, 2023 – Five people, including four Morgan State University students, were shot Tuesday night at the historically Black university. The shooting occurred during homecoming festivities. Brady, the national gun violence prevention organization, released the following statement:

Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:

“The horror and trauma of a mass shooting is unfortunately not a new experience for many of America’s youth. Because racism exacerbates the root causes of gun violence, this is especially true for Black youth. It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that this shooting took place during homecoming week for a generation that has been raised on daily gun violence in neighborhoods, school shooting drills, and mass shootings.
“Gun violence has been a daily presence for this generation, particularly among Black youth, and it is now following them into adulthood because of this country’s relationship with guns and the gun industry’s deadly influence over our lawmakers. Our hearts go out to the victims and families of this senseless shooting.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
