Washington, D.C., April 19, 2023 – This week, the Tennessee legislature passed legislation that would provide broad immunity from civil liability to gun industry members, even when they engage in reckless, negligent or irresponsible marketing, design and sales practices. The legislation follows a school shooting last month in Nashville where three children and three adults were killed. It also follows the expulsion of two Black state representatives from the state House after they participated in a gun violence prevention protest alongside advocates and survivors.
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“In the wake of the Covenant School shooting, this legislation is a slap in the face to all survivors and victims of gun violence in Tennessee.
“This bill would provide protections afforded to no other industry and would leave victims and survivors of gun violence without adequate redress for their injuries, even when gun sellers engage in reckless and negligent behavior.
“The Tennessee legislation isn’t just choosing to do nothing, they’re choosing to go backwards and make our communities even less safe, all in an attempt to protect gun industry profits.”
