Bills Implement Assault Weapons Ban, Waiting Periods and Safety Training, Gun Manufacturer Accountability.

Washington, D.C., April 13, 2023 – Washington state lawmakers have passed five crucial bills that will create critical barriers to self-harm and harm to others, ban the sale of assault weapons, provide essential information on safe storage via school notification resources, help keep guns out of the hands of those convicted of high risk crimes, and provide justice to victims of gun violence.

Brady President Kris Brown said:

“With the passage of these gun safety bills, Washington joins ten other states across the U.S. in implementing a waiting period for firearms purchases and becomes the ninth state to enact an assault weapons ban. The implementation of these bills will create critical barriers to self-harm and harm to others, ensuring that the people of Washington are safer from gun violence than ever before.

“This package of bills is a clear indication that the people of Washington want to live in a state where their safety is a top priority, and that their elected officials are listening. We are grateful to the many bill sponsors and the legislature for their unwavering commitment to reducing gun violence and saving lives in their communities.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
