Washington, D.C., April 13, 2023 – Washington state lawmakers have passed five crucial bills that will create critical barriers to self-harm and harm to others, ban the sale of assault weapons, provide essential information on safe storage via school notification resources, help keep guns out of the hands of those convicted of high risk crimes, and provide justice to victims of gun violence.

“With the passage of these gun safety bills, Washington joins ten other states across the U.S. in implementing a waiting period for firearms purchases and becomes the ninth state to enact an assault weapons ban. The implementation of these bills will create critical barriers to self-harm and harm to others, ensuring that the people of Washington are safer from gun violence than ever before.“This package of bills is a clear indication that the people of Washington want to live in a state where their safety is a top priority, and that their elected officials are listening. We are grateful to the many bill sponsors and the legislature for their unwavering commitment to reducing gun violence and saving lives in their communities.”
